Will we really give up our laptops?

Steve Rubel opines that the rise of smartphones and tablet computers signals the end of the mainstream Internet “as we know it.” I think Rubel is right that mobile devices are going to overtake non-portable PCs in terms of the amount of time we spend using them, but I’m not sure we’ll completely abandon the multitasking, customization and configuration that traditional PCs provide. It’s going to be tricky for anyone creating Web interfaces to decide whether and how to create traditional websites and/or mobile and tablet apps. That’s where I do agree with Rubel that development budgets for Web “experiences” are only going to grow and keep growing.
I still feel obliged to sound my usual refrain here, too: Unless you’ve figured out the message you want to deliver, the way you deliver it doesn’t matter.
