What to do if you aren’t Bill Gates

January 21, 2010

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates joined Twitter yesterday, and as of this morning he’s amassed more than 280,000 followers. Not bad for one day’s work and a total of nine tweets. By the end of the day,  he’d also launched a blog.

It’s easy to draw a large audience using social media when you are a celebrity or a multinational corporation, but the exercise is much different if you don’t fit into either of those categories. Effective online communication doesn’t happen overnight most of the time. For the rest of us, social media is an ongoing effort to create content and build an audience, one that requires creativity and commitment to succeed.
